REPUBLIC OF TURKEY MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION BORUSAN OTOMOTİV ZEHRA NURHAN KOCABIYIK PRIMARY SCHOOL

Aware of its responsibilities with the extension of the compulsory education period up to eight years, Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation built the Ministry of National Education Borusan Otomotiv Zehra Nurhan Kocabıyık Primary School, next to Istanbul University Campus in Avcılar, with the contributions of Borusan Otomotiv.

This primary school which started education in October 1998 and set an example not only for the schools in our country, but also for schools in Western countries spared no effort to ensure that students could benefit from modern education facilities.

The three-story school, the project of which was drawn by Master Architect Prof. Metin Hepgüler and costing USD 3.5 million, was completed in a short period of eight months and contains a total of 26 classrooms consisting of two nursery classes and eight classrooms each for three branches. The smart classroom project has been implemented in the school since the 2005-2006 academic year and computers and projection systems were installed in all classrooms and educational areas of the school. With this system, ready software and information from the Internet can be transferred from the computer to the projection device and presented to the students. All classrooms are interconnected through a network and can reach the world through the Internet. In addition to the classrooms, there are four preschool classrooms, two workshop rooms, a music room, a painting room, a science laboratory, a computer room, a chess room, a library, an infirmary, a dining hall and administration offices. Also, the multi-purpose hall designed to be used as a gym and also as two separate meeting rooms, is one of the important indicators of the facilities of the school.

In the 1999 - 2000 academic year which is its second year, the school was included in the scope of spreading the Curriculum Laboratory School, which were only 40 in our country at the time and classroom capacity consisted of maximum 30 students. The status of the Ministry of National Education Borusan Otomotiv Zehra Nurhan Kocabıyık Primary School was changed as Study and Feeding School on Jul 14, 2004 with the approval of the General Directorate of Primary Education.

As one of the 17 Study and Feeding Schools in Istanbul, it provided service to the children of working parents. Following the 4+4+4 education circular published in 2012, this status was removed by the Ministry of National Education and the school was turned into a secondary school. The multi-purpose laboratories and rooms were turned into classrooms and the number of students was increased to 1150. Among the facilities in the school to familiarize students with nature are a botanic garden and animal houses for the animals fed in the school.

With a capacity of 770, Borusan Otomotiv Zehra Nurhan Kocabıyık Primary School has significant differences from other schools in Istanbul in terms of both the facilities it provides to its students and its architectural design. There are many requests to apply for enrollment in the school due to the low number of students in the classrooms, the healthy educational environment provided to the students, features outside traditional types of primary schools and achievement of the ISO 9002 quality certificate in 2002.
